Certified Financial Planner in Madison, WI
We help people like you, because we are people like you.
My story as a Financial Planner:
My story as a Financial Planner, however, didn’t start when I launched the firm. Much like you, the goals have changed over time, but the thread of why I love being a Financial Planner has stayed the same.
In 2015, I finished up my education with a Bachelor’s Degree in Personal Finance from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
My career began working for a large Broker-Dealer, where I largely worked as a Financial Representative, which was somewhat of a “Financial Advisor in disguise,” and much of the role involved selling financial products such as life or disability insurance.
I won’t go too far down this rabbit hole, but let’s just say there’s a reason why I chose to be a Fee-Only Financial Planner serving the Madison WI area.
After my time there, I was fortunate enough to find a role with a Fee-Only Financial Planner here in Madison. Eventually, I grew out of the role and started my first business, where I worked as a behind-the-scenes assistant developing comprehensive financial plans for Financial Planners in Colorado, New York, Wisconsin, and Texas.
At the same time, I began co-hosting the “You’re a Financial Planner, Now What?” podcast, which was put on by the Financial Planning Association (the largest membership organization for Financial Planners). Through this opportunity, I had the honor and privilege to interview some of the industry’s largest movers and shakers.
Harmony Wealth was founded on the premise of a Financial Plan being the intersection of “how” and “why” we use our financial resources.
Many times, our profession is overly focused on “Am I on track to retire?”, when instead the more fulfilling version of finances could be “Am I able to do what I want to do now, and still retire when I want to?“. We find the conversations around this framework are much more interesting than “save, save, save, and one day hope to retire so I can finally do all the things I wanted to do in my 20’s, 30’s, or 40’s”.
In essence, “what is enough?”. What is enough today? What is enough in retirement? When does my time become more valuable than more money? The answers will change, as life around us changes.
For me, the answers to these questions meant I didn’t want to work a traditional job at a traditional firm. Making a larger impact, with people like us (Allison and I), meant more than working for the “biggest firm”. Harmony Wealth is the “how” to my “why”, and it is a blessing to work alongside amazing people on their journey to fulfilling the dreams they have.
My “why” behind Harmony Wealth is to:
Break the stigma that working with a Financial Planner is about as exciting or enjoyable as going to the Dentist (no offense to the Dentist crowd out there!). No suits or ties here, and we will never tell you to floss… unless you really want us to.
Foster a comfortable and safe environment where you can be yourself, feel respected, be appreciated, and feel heard. (It’s also why I have all my fun trinkets and memorabilia behind me in our meetings!)
Work with people who are genuinely engaged and excited about taking their financial lives to the next level. (We’re not here to just send you a statement a few times a year.)
To have flexibility in who I work with. (Long gone are the days of dreading client calls with people I barely knew!)
To serve those with ongoing and dynamic changes in life. (I like a good challenge every now and then!)
Create an environment that allows me to provide high-quality advice and service, without losing control over my free time. (By working with fewer clients, service can stay high without working 60 hour weeks.)
Outside the Office:
As the last bullet point highlights, this career journey of mine isn’t just about work!
These are some of my favorite things to do in my free-time and throughout the Madison, WI area:
Paddleboard on Lake Mendota or Lake Monona (only on those days the wind isn’t going to blow us away though!), or get outside to see all the great sights!
Cozy up with a cup of coffee or glass of beer. (Some of our favorites are Lakeside Street Coffee near Monona Bay and Working Draft Beer Company in the Atwood neighborhood.
Enjoy tasty treats and Stella’s Cheese Bread at the Dane County Farmer’s Market near the Wisconsin State Capitol.
Attend, volunteer, and spend time with our Community Group at Door Creek Church – Sprecher Road Campus.
Spend time with our friends, family, and of course cheering on the Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers!
